Up until the emergence of interactive media at end of the 20th century, our consciousness was constrained to a virtual two-dimensional perspective by the idea of “story,” a linear timeline with an established beginning, middle, and end. Stories and dramas from news, radio, and television programs sent a rigid, singular “truth,” “story,” or “history” to the masses; they inserted an approved storyline in the minds of the populace, and repeated it on every front. The mass hypnosis of the media is the real power behind the Matrix.
Interactive media, which emerged from a fledgling concept to a full-fledged industry in the space of a few years, has changed the way people think. The main difference between a story and an interactive interface is choice. Interactive design creates intersections in a computer program: places where the user can branch to other choices. Even if he “plays” the interface many times, the “story” can always have a different ending. When both the story and the outcome can be determined by the individual, it triggers a massive change in our consciousness; we become aware, at a subconscious level, of our power to change…
