The “incarnational wound” of the lion in the Strength card is the trauma that the ego has suffered as a result of the unnatural inequality of the patriarchal system. The Devil card shows clearly what happens when instead of honoring and respecting the Divine Feminine, you choose to dominate, exploit and rape the Earth or her representatives, women. Christ said, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did unto one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did unto me.” Christ is saying that any injury inflicted upon another is reflected as an inner wound in the self of the persona inflicting the harm; when a man harms a woman or the Earth, his inner self — the Divine Feminine, or “anima” — is wounded in the same degree. The holistic view of the “oneness of all things” is what is called “Christ consciousness” —it is essential for the goals of any kind of spiritual enlightenment.
A recognition of the equality of the Divine Feminine Goddess and her reunion with the Divine God is at the heart of any holistic philosophy or esoteric practice. The “marriage” of the God and Goddess is an internal matter, a way of “wholing” the self; it represents the healing of the incarnational wound, the primal wound of separation. No healing can be accomplished without recognizing the parts that make up the whole that have to be reunited within the self. This is what the process of enlightenment means.
