The Journey of the Fool ~ Part 4

The Fool walks through not just the Major Arcana, which symbolize the “higher” path of spiritual mastery, but through the other cards in the Tarot. He travels through the Minor Arcana, the four suits which each represent a different path of Earth-based mastery. The Fool nears the edge of the cliff but his eyes are on the sky, as if he has a vision of a totally different reality. He is so innocent to physical reality that he doesn’t comprehend that he might fall. A little dog that represents socialized consciousness nips at his heels to try to warn him of the dangers of his foolishness. Jumping off a cliff is certainly foolish in the eyes of “normal” people, but the Fool comes from a place where physical, or social rules don’t apply. The Fool is looking up, he has a vision.

What is the vision of The Fool? He desires to become The Angel or Perfected Man. His task on Earth is to remember his original, perfected Self while in physical form. He came from a state of perfection, and his job is to “re-member” or reassemble himself back into perfection while experiencing duality.

The Journey of the Fool ~ Part 3

The Tarot follows the progression of The Fool on his path through life, as he strives to find what he lost; to remember the higher consciousness that he forgot when he was forced into spiritual amnesia by the density of this plane.

The Fool is arguably the most important card in the deck, but this has more to do with the fact that the Fool, as the daring Hero, is a universal archetype. He is a hero because he dares to do what may seem to be dangerous or foolhardy to other souls: come to Earth.

The Journey of the Fool ~ Part 2

…Calling this card “The Fool” is a blind — an intentionally misleading title, meant to confound the profane seekers of enlightenment, who would not be able to reconcile the “foolishness” of a Fool with goal of wisdom or enlightenment. The Fool stands in for the Hero; a universal archetype that thrives in the mystical arcana of every civilization on Earth.

A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man. ~Joseph Campbell, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949)

The Hero is in every fable, in every culture. Often he starts out as an outcast or loner. He begins his journey as the underdog in a battle or situation that grossly disfavors him, and proceeds on his quest — suffering one or many dark nights of the Soul — without help from his fellows. He is on his own. Everyone he left behind thinks that he is a Fool. And from their standpoint that is the only thing he can be. Often he wonders if what they think of him is really true, but, although he may waver and doubt himself, he cannot stop his quest once he has started…

The Journey of the Fool ~ Part 1

SPIRIT IN MATTER—at once both the journey and the seeker of experience. The Fool represents the Spirit who has descended into matter. He is the holy fool who can be either foolish or wise.

Traditionally, The Fool is the only unnumbered card in ancient decks; modern decks assign the value of Zero to this card. One could argue that the Zero is not a number at all, it is a placeholder that has no intrinsic value. However, the Zero as the universal symbol of the circle is an archetypical concept that defines the vast sea of Cosmic Consciousness, the implicate field. A circle is one of the most ancient glyphs worldwide, appearing in every ancient culture on Earth. The symbol of the circle means Spirit, with its center everywhere and circumference nowhere.

The Fool is the most important card in the Tarot; he is said to be traveling through the deck as he travels through life. Ultimately, the Fool represents everyman in his journey through life. The Fool represents the Soul of the Querent as it journeys through material existence and learns how to apply the laws and principles of the universe in his life…

The Art of the Tarot

The art of the Tarot is best represented by the Temperance/ALCHEMY card, which demonstrates the magic of creative synthesis and the alchemy of deliberate creation. Reading the Tarot involves a creative synthesis of the Reader’s personality, intuition, knowledge, and wisdom, married in a mystical union with the Reader’s Higher Self, achieved through the medium of the pictures and numbers of the cards.

Whenever we read the Tarot, we are participating in an intriguing tradition of self-discovery, remembrance, and creative envisioning that reaches back into the mists of time, and prepares us for our journey into an empowered future.

The Mystery of the Minor Arcana

When I first started studying the Tarot, I didn’t see the connections that I do now. I was confused by the titles and some of the images, which seemed to present a barrier to my understanding. Realizing that my own preconceptions were the cause I redoubled my efforts to “see beyond” the image into its metaphorical, rather than historical, meaning. Then I started to see and understand the archetypes in the Major Arcana.

The lower cards do not contain the same kind of symbols and imagery. It almost seems as if the Tarot is actually two decks: the Major Arcana and the pip cards. When I focused my intuition on the cards they started to speak to me.

But the lower cards continued to mystify me.

I wondered, “Is it possible that the lower cards are as meaningful and powerful as the Major Arcana?” When I considered that the Tarot might be an ancient map for the evolution of man, the wisdom of the cards suddenly began to reveal itself to me.

Hidden in Full View

The originators of the Tarot hid their ancient knowledge in full view, to protect it from those who would keep the average man in ignorance of his true power. The best way to enslave a man is through his mind. The word, “government” means “to rule the mind” (govern-mental). The Tarot, if read properly, and if its guidance is followed rigorously, can empower the individual to question the status quo, and so evolve his own consciousness. This is why a system of self-realization that allows an individual to tap into their own intuition and guidance is recognized as a threat by the ruling class of any epoch, including this one. Of course, the rulers in any system don’t want their constituents to become self-realized; evolved individuals don’t need governance, conventions, or traditions. They follow the dictates of Natural Law. An understanding of the Oneness behind all appearances would not allow them to hurt another. This is what Christ meant when he said, “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me.”

The Tarot as a Personal Manifestation Machine (part 3)

Now, try one or more of the following ideas:

1. Meditate on your chosen card, choose its equivalent card from the Tarot of Creativity or another deck and see how the meaning for this card enhances your understanding. In the case of a card with a seemingly negative meaning, use it to help you resolve the block indicated. Use an equivalent card in another suit or deck to help advise you on how to proceed.

2. If you chose a card with negative implications, choose a contrasting card that best symbolizes what you want to manifest in your life. If the card was positive then keep the card. Memorize the image so you can recall it at will. Visualize this card, bring it up often throughout the day for as many days as seems appropriate. If you can’t memorize it, then put the card on a table in your home or on your desk where you can see it many times throughout the day. Feel the emotions and feelings in the card, use the image as a mnemonic device to help you visualize your desired outcome.

3. Find the number in all the suits that match your card’s number and line them up to see how to use the power in all of the suits to manifest what you want. If one or more of the cards are “negative” in feel, know that you are merely in a rough spot: use the cards as wise advice to help you correct your course, and ease your transition. Choose another card in the same suit that best epitomizes what you do want and use it as in #2 above.

4. Bring up the Major Arcana card that matches the number of your card for the “meta-meaning” of your cards number. Use this card as wise counsel to advise you on how to best proceed, or how to better understand your situation.

5. Look at the cards in the suit that precede and follow the card you chose (if you chose the Six of Wands, you would be looking at the Five of Wands that precedes your card, and the Seven of Wands that follows it). See how the progression may show you what you need to work on and how to handle what may happen as a result. Alternatively you can use these three cards as a Past, Present, Future reading to gain insight on your path.

The Tarot as a Personal Manifestation Machine (part 2)

You don’t have to memorize the cards, although this helps a lot. If you have memorized all the cards, then you can allow your intuition to bring up a card in your mind. If you are just beginning or have difficulty visualizing the cards, then do this:

Separate your deck into suits; put the Major Arcana in numerical order and set it aside for a while. Then choose the category that reflects what you want to manifest and choose the pile of cards of that respective suit (see above). Now choose a single card from your pile in one of three ways:

TECHNIQUE ONE: Randomize the cards in the suit you chose and pick one. This card will be what your intuition and Higher Guidance wants you to focus on.

TECHNIQUE TWO: Look through the cards and see if one really appeals to you.

TECHNIQUE THREE: Put the cards of the suit in a line on the table progressing from the ace and ending at the king. Look at how the cards progress through the suit. Choose the card that most accurately reflects the place you feel you are right now.

The Tarot as a Personal Manifestation Machine (part 1)

You can use the Tarot like flashcards to help you focus your intent, visualize, and then manifest the life you want. This is a very powerful technique that uses the natural structure of the Tarot. The suits of the Tarot reflect all human desires; this makes it very easy to target the area you want to work with at the moment:

WANDS/FIRE = intent, energy, success, desire, passion, creative inspiration

SWORDS/AIR = mental discipline, details, planning, brainstorming

CUPS/WATER = love, relationships

PENTACLES/EARTH = health, wealth, financial success

MAJOR ARCANA = spiritual laws and progression, spiritual aspirations

Learning how to Handle Reversals in Reading Tarot (part 3)

In general, when a card is upright, its energy is free to manifest; if it is reversed, the energy of the upright card may be blocked, losing power, or not yet fully developed. Many people think that a reversed card means the opposite of the upright card, but this interpretation may be too simplistic once you start really working with the cards, and they start “talking” to you. Here are a few ideas of what a reversal might mean:

~ A hidden energy or influence

~ A developing energy

~ Blocked energy

~ An energy that is waning

~ An inner lesson

~ An event or influence that has recently passed

~ Spiritual information

~ A shamanic or spiritual initiation

~ The opposite meaning

Learning how to Handle Reversals in Reading Tarot (part 2)

When you are learning the Tarot for the first time, I recommend that you only work with upright cards. To do this, simply shuffle the cards so that they remain upright, turn them right side up after dealing, or interpret them upright no matter how they appear in a reading. Once you have thoroughly learned the upright meanings, you can use your intuition as to what an upside-down card in a particular reading might mean. Remember that just like the upright cards, the reversals will change in meaning according to the circumstances, which could be the question of the Querent or the influence of the nearby cards.

Learning how to Handle Reversals in Reading Tarot (part 1)

When you think about it, learning the Tarot can be a monumental task. After all, there are 78 cards. If you try to learn the reversal meanings at the same time that you learn the upright meanings, you are doubling your task at the very least, and this is just if you believe that all the cards have only one possible meaning in every reading or situation, which is simply not true.

A reversed card, like its upright sibling, never means the same thing in every reading; the meaning adjusts and the card transmutes according to the circumstances and the variables. For this reason, I think it is better to start with the basics before you add complications to the learning process.

How to Read Tarot Without a Deck (part 3)

If I was beginning to learn the Tarot today, I would do it the same way, but I would study numerology first, then study all the cards with the same numbers together, seeing how the number is expressed in each suit and in the Major Arcana.

This book is designed to make it easy to memorize the deck because it is arranged with all the cards of the same number together, which makes it easy to study the cards; in this way, you could have the entire tarot deck memorized in twenty-two days or less. If you study the Tarot this way, you too could find that you can do readings in your head.

How to Read Tarot Without a Deck (part 2)

…Because of this, I can easily do a reading without a deck. The cards come to me as an auditory message—I “hear” the card titles read to me as if over the phone, and then I form the image of them in my mind’s eye. For some odd reason, I often get the cards as their playing card equivalents. For instance, here is a sample of a 3-card reading:

The original message using playing card titles:
Ace of Clubs — 3 of Diamonds — Knight of Spades

Which translates to:
Ace of Wands — 3 of Pentacles — Knight of Swords

Looking up the equivalent cards in my deck (you can use this book or The Tarot of Creativity deck), I get:

Ace of Fire (The SPARK of life) — 3 of Earth (EXPLORE/CULTIVATE ) — Knight of Air (ENGAGE)

The words naturally form a sentence that becomes a reading:

ENGAGE the SPARK of life by EXPLORING and CULTIVATING your CREATIVITY.

The Summation Reading
Adding these numbers together gives us the summation reading: 1 + 3 + 12 = 16, which reduces to 7.

The Tower (16) or The Chariot (7). The Chariot in The Tarot of Creativity is titled Adventure. The summation card advises me see the path forward as an adventure.

How to Read Tarot Without a Deck (part 1)

One day I found myself studying the Rider Waite Smith Tarot in earnest. Every day I memorized a card, starting with the Major Arcana and then studying all the cards of the same number together; when I finished I had all the cards so imprinted upon my mind that I could do tarot readings in my head. When I do a reading these days, I can remember all the cards and all their positions in the reading for weeks afterwards because I have memorized all the cards in the deck.
